Heart Disease In Men and Maintaining A Healthy Heart

Coronary Heart Disease In Men

Heart disease claims more men's lives than any other disease, and if you have a family history of heart disease, you have a greater chance of developing it. However the good news is that by making changes to your lifestyle you can significantly reduce your risk of developing heart disease.

Reducing Your Risk of Heart Disease In Men:
You can make a real difference to your health and heart by:

-- Stopping smoking: Stopping smoking can reduce your risk of a heart attack by 50  to 70 percent within five years.

-- Maintain a healthy weight and reduce cholesterol
-- Exercising regularly
-- Controlling your blood pressure and stress levels.  Every point drop in diastolic pressure (the lower number) reduces risk by 2 to 3 percent.
-- Eating a healthy, balanced diet and a reduction in cholesterol: A decline from 240 to under 200 halves heart-attack risk.
-- Moderate alcohol: drinking no more than the recommended amount of alcohol
-- Keeping your salt intake low
-- Keeping your sugar intake low

These lifestyle changes may also help you to reduce the risk of many other diseases such as lung cancer, bowel cancer and stroke.

High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a major risk factor for cardiovcascular heart disease. If you have high blood pressure over a prolonged period of time, you are significantly more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke or kidney failure. Ensure that you visit your GP regularly and ask them to monitor your blood pressure. If your blood pressure is high on several separate occasions, your doctor may recommend medication to bring it back to normal. Blood pressure is usually considered high if it measures more than 140/90.

If you are taking medication to control your blood pressure, it's a good idea to have it checked every six months.
